The Project "Problems of Asia and implementation of the Millennium Development Goals. The
case of chosen countries" was being implemented from September until December 2008 as a part
of the programme of Development Education conducted by Education for Democracy Foundation,
and it was co-financed within the frames of Polish foreign-aid programme of Ministry of Foreign
Affairs of the Republic of Poland.
The project was aimed at three groups: academic environment of Lublin, namely students of the
Maria Curie- Skłodowska University in Lublin, the Catholic University of Lublin and Agricultural
University of Lublin, as well as at children aged 8-14 from Lubartów and the nearby area, along
with the students of the high school in Lubartów. The aim of the project was to show how little we
know, even though we call ourselves well-educated people, about the most important problems of
human beings.
By showing lives in different regions of Asia, we wanted to implement in young children the need
of searching for answers to challenging questions, the need of helping and cooperating with others.
Organizations which cooperate with us are experienced and knowledgeable in the subject of China,
Tibet, India, Burma, Timor and other Asian countries. We showed health and educational situation
as it is in reality, situation of women, opportunities for eradicating extreme poverty and famine in
those regions and we drew attention to the problem of the natural disasters.
The project "Stranger? Rapprochement- Chechen childhood" - carried out in 2009, aimed
at a few target groups: teachers in the school attended by children of refugees in Łuków, local
community living in the area of the refugee camps and the community of Lublin- citizens and
students of higher education schools of Lublin.
Partners of the project: Homo Faber Association and UMCS Students' of journalism club, the
faculty of political science.
The project aimed at changing the way the refugees are perceived in our region by organizing
informative events. There were three events within the project:
Training on the subject of working with refugees' children at schools, directed to the teachers from
the school in Łuków, where approximately 70 Chechen children attend to, conducted by coaches-
Izabela Gospodarczyk and Joanna Posiadło-Dacewicz, a Mini Conference- The Chechen Day for
children from the school in Łuków, to which we invited the Chechen theatre group form Łuków,
and three Polish and Chechen children form Warsaw school on Raszyńska Street, along with the
adult Chechens living in Poland. To the Conference directed to students and citizens of Lublin we
invited Krystyna Kurczab-Redlich - the author of "Głową o mur Kremla" book and guests invited
by Chechens and activists of Caucasus organizations. Moreover, we prepared an exhibition of
photographs about and from Chechnya and a short film to document the project and the website.
Association "For Earth" took part in the international project "Great- Global Rights:
Europeans Acting Together". The aim of the project was to shape a view on the development
problems from the perspective of human rights. The project in Poland was coordinated by: Akcja
Humanitarna (Humanitarian Organization) and Education for Democracy Foundation (Fundacja
Edukacja dla Demokracji), which invited our organization to cooperation. All the organizations
taking part in the project, organized a joint social campaign connected with the subject of human
rights.
10th February 2010 within the campaign Great our theatre group from the Refugee Camp in
Łuków was invited by Kreadukacja Foundation to the Primary School nr 5 in Świdnik to present a
performance PHATMAT.
On 25th May 2010 in Lublin at the Humanistic Faculty of UMCS, we had a pleasure to welcome
Kasia Jagiełło from Kraków who gave a lecture entitled: "Creating alternative economic
circulation, defying the globalization processes, on the case of East Timor" touching the
subject of systems enabling economic independence of the Third World countries. Besides
fascinating history of East Timor, a small country which has recently regained independence, we
had a possibility to learn more about its strategic meaning and the fight of two giants for taking
influence over it: Indonesia and Australia. We also learnt about the way in which the World Bank
and UN function in this area.
On 9th June 2010 at 6 p.m. in a café CAFÉ LULU at 8 Orla Street ( at the back of Okopowa Street)
in Lublin we screened films from the series: Child's rights, we get involved. Togo and Haiti.
24th of July on the Po Farze Square in Lublin a Day of a Refugee was held.
During the Day of Refugee in Lublin, spectators could watch a Polish-Chechen dancing group
performing the traditional Caucasus Lezghinka dance and listen to a band of young drummers from
the refugee camp in Łuków.
On the 13th of October 2010 at the premises of Homo Faber Association in Lublin, a meeting
with representatives of MPs and MPs for European Parliament for our region was held. The
meeting was organized by:
Foundation for Christian Culture ARTOS, Foundation for Educational Activities KreAdukacja
Foundation, Association For Earth, Homo Faber Association.
During the meeting the aims of Millennium Development Goals were introduced, i.e. the goals
chosen by the UN which need to be achieved to provide proper life conditions to people around the
world. These are:
1. Eradicating extreme poverty and famine.
2. Providing general education on the elementary level.
3. Promoting equality of sexes and social promotion of women.
4. Limiting children mortality.
5. Improving health care for mothers.
6. Limiting the spread of HIV/AIDS, malaria and other contagious diseases.
7. Providing protection of natural environment.
8. Creating global partnership agreement for development.
Later on Ms Izabela Wilczyńska from the Polish Humanitarian Organization presented the degree
of preparation of the Act of Polish Foreign Aid.
The preparations of the act started 10 years ago and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic
of Poland has been engaged in its creations. The bill was debated by the Council of Ministers
however, the Ministry of Finance brought it in question. They were mainly concerning the idea
of appointing an agency dealing with developmental aid. Now the draft is edited by the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs. We hope (and here I mean the non government organizations dealing with
developmental aid and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), that this bill will be passed to Sejm, the
lower chamber of Polish Parliament.
Within the project "Illi, i.e. song, a youth Chechen and Polish theatre" which was implemented
from March to October 2008, there was theatre, singing and music workshop organized and carried
out by our actors- Elżbieta Rojek and Katarzyna Tadeusz as well as Tomasz Kozdraja.
The outcome of the workshop is following:
- Dancing performance, performance of Brzechwa's tales carried out by the children from the
refugee camp and the Primary School no. 5 in Łuków I July 2010 during the Day of a Refugee in
Lublin.
- The theatre performance entitled "Decik pondar", performance of Chechen songs presented
by children of both nationalities (from the camp in Leonów and from the complex of schools in
Germany) took place in Warsaw, in the Junior High School on Raszyńska Street.
- Publishing the Chechen and Polish songbook.
The programme was targeted at the youth but indirectly we hoped that we would also reach the
adults from the refugee camps and also the Polish local community.
